FACT: LMHPs do not have to be involved in substance administration or the experience session.

Our resources are designed to make your role easier.

They are designed by therapists and professionals to help educate and empower you, the LMHP, in determining if and how to utilize psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT), also known as mushroom therapy or psilocybin therapy, into your existing practice.

PATA’s model (below) shows how LMHPs can legally be a part of a client’s PAT experience without expensive training.

FACT: While a personal psychedelic experience is beneficial for a therapist, it is not required.

Psilocybin therapy, AKA mushroom therapy, for therapists

The PATA Model

Psilocybin-assisted therapy, AKA mushroom therapy and psilocybin therapy, is centered around mental health therapy conducted in a collaborative approach with the client’s/seeker’s facilitator/guide who manages the day-of experience.

Our model describes how LMHPs can legally and ethically participate in PAT, psilocybin therapy, anywhere. Most long-term change can be promoted in the post-psilocybin integration session(s) led by experienced therapists.

Learn about our Model

Our model is straightforward and shows how mental health professionals and psychedelic professionals can work together to address the consumers' mental health needs.

Resources to help your practice

A simple approach

One of the main challenges we hear from LMHPs is their concern about discussing PAT with clients/consumers because psilocybin is still a federally illegal substance.

As our model shows, you don't need to be involved in the actual experience! You aren't a prescriber of psilocybin therapy, so you aren't in a position to discuss dosage or anything involved with the sourcing or consumption of psilocybin.

FACT: With Oregon now offering their Psilocybin Services program for adult-supported use, a legal option is available for psilocybin use. Other options are available for your clients depending on their preferences if they are unable to travel or afford this option.

Harm reduction

By using a harm-reduction approach, you can discuss the mental health safety a client could take if they choose to use psilocybin or participate in psilocybin therapy.

Our resources and tools are designed around mental health and psychedelic-assisted therapy best practices.

Openly promoting the use of psilocybin is different from providing mental health options for safety. Mental health safety becomes the topic, not the substance. Other professionals are available to answer questions about the actual experience and what occurs if your client uses a facilitator/guide/sitter.

Definitions and terms matter

We often see LMHPs are concerned about the terms preparation and set & setting, for example. These terms are used more traditionally in relation to the physical and logistical aspects of the experience to prevent a physically uncomfortable or "bad" experience.

The same terms for LMHPs are centered on the consumer/client being mentally prepared for a mind-altering experience so their post-session integration with their therapist is the most beneficial for their mental health goals. View our definitions page for more information.
